Luke 2:8-9 Luke 2:8-9 And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with awe.
We all know this verse from Luke's birth narrative. But think about where the shepherds were. Out in the fields, of course - what is so strange about that? That is where they received this revelation from God: out in the fields, as they were going about their normal life. They hadn't gathered somewhere for prayer, they weren't attending some service somewhere or even having their quiet times. They were simply getting on with the nornal everday gritty business of life - working the night shift - and God appeared to them. Should we expect anything else?
