Luke 4:8 And Jesus answered him, "It is written, 'You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only shall you serve.'"
This is Jesus' response to the second temptation (in Luke) that the enemy laid before Him: to acknowledge his power and jurisdiction and submit to them for the sake of the greater prize. In a saying of the world: the end justifies the means. Only it doesn't. It never does. We are clearly told that God is to be our only object of worship and service. But no-one and nothing else. No matter the temptation, the ease of bypassing difficulties or the apparent blockage in the way, God's call is clear: follow Him alone and do not compromise.
