Jeremiah 26:2 Thus says the LORD: Stand in the court of the LORD's house, and speak to all the cities of Judah that come to worship in the house of the LORD all the words that I command you to speak to them; do not hold back a word.
Here are Jeremiah's instructions. See how little room Jeremiah is given for manoeuver. He is told exactly where to go and what to say; in public and everything. He may not try to find somewhere discrete and he may not edit or be selective with the Lord's words. Everything must be spoken clearly in the most public of places.
We have a contemporary way of describing someone who tells only the bare minimum (if that) of the facts: economic with the truth. Politicians of all hues have been caught in this - a quick Google search for the phrase produces over eighteen thousand results.
Jeremiah - and, I venture to suggest, ourselves - did not and do not have the luxury of witholding any of the uncomfortable words and rebukes that the Lord is saying in these days to individuals, nations and the world. They must be spoken, they must be spoken out and, to ensure that the intended audience and those who need to witness the words, they must be spoken in public and to maximum effect.
Ouch! But such is our calling as followers of Jesus. We can do no less.
