Luke 5:5 And Simon answered, "Master, we toiled all night and took nothing! But at Your word I will let down the nets."
Peter sounds grudging, doesn't he? We are the professional fishermen, he is saying. Does Jesus think they don't know their job? Besides, everyone knows the fish go off into deep water during the day, far from the shore. But, nevertheless, [FX: big sigh] because you say so, I'll put the nets out again. Perhaps he wants to prove Jesus wrong, as if it is He who doesn't know what He is talking about?
Luke 5:8 But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord."
That is why, when they get an enormous catch, Peter says that he is a sinful man. He realises that he has just been baiting the Master and how disrespectful he has been. I don't deserve this, he says, I was only winding you up. But Jesus came through and met Simon at that point of testing and delivered the catch because He had a plan and a purpose for Simon.
He has a plan for you too. What miracle has He done in your life to prove it?
