Luke 9:49a

Luke 9:49a John answered, "Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name ..."

Perhaps we always think of this phrase starting a passage, rather than being significant in itself, but take a moment to slow down and think what this is saying.

John and the other disciples have seen someone - another man - casting out demons in the name of Jesus. He doesn't say, "trying to cast out demons," but "casting out demons." Demons are being cast out; the name of Jesus is always effective if invoked with proper faith. And this ministry is being performed openly, not in secret, otherwise John and the others would not have seen. So the name of Jesus, the power of God and the kingdom of heaven are being advertised and promoted in exactly the same way as the disciples were sent out to do.

We are not "the disciples", the original twelve, but perhaps we too can call upon the name of Jesus in faith and see miracles. When did you last ask?
