Luke 9:49b "... we tried to stop him, because he does not follow with us."
John finishes off his report: not only did he and the other disciples see someone else casting out demons in the name of Jesus, but they tried to stop him because he wasn't one of the group. He might not have been doing it right, he might not have been saying the right words. He might not have been ascribing honour and glory correctly to the Son sent by the Father in the power of the Spirit. Yes, that is possible.
Or was this actually something rather more parochial? Was this because this other chap, whoever he was, wasn't a proper chap like us, one of the team, one of the inner circle who were close to Jesus and went around with Him. He wasn't one of us!
Do we ever see that attitude being played out today? People taking parochial ownership of their little fiefdoms and attempting to control what happens and exclude others?
