Luke 9:50 But Jesus said to him, "Do not stop him, for the one who is not against you is for you."
But Jesus is having none of it! Immediately He counters John's argument. Notice that whether the other chap is part of the group or not isn't important. Jesus is very clear: do not stop him. Do not interfere with the work of the Spirit or what God is doing, just because it isn't what you are doing or doesn't look like what you think the kingdom ought to look like.
Jesus goes further. In a very inclusive statement, He says that if someone is not against us - that is, actively opposing or countering the work that we are doing - then he must be considered to be for us, in agreement with us. This is an instruction to work together with people, rather than finding ways to work against them or exclude them from what we are doing.
Isn't that a radical principle!
