Isaiah 5:13

Isaiah 5:13 Therefore My people go into exile for lack of knowledge; their honored men go hungry, and their multitude is parched with thirst.

While it is widely recognised that ignorance is no excuse before the law - that is, that pleading that one is unaware of a law does not remove one's culpability for breaking it, this text drives the point home.

It is because Israel did not know their God that they were sent into exile. They did not study His word, they did not put it into practice and they did not know Him - they had no relationship with Him. And, so the prophet says, it is precisely that lack of knowledge that places them under judgement and would send not just individuals but the whole nation - My people - into exile.

Where do we stand before God today? Do we study His word? Do we put God's word into practice? Do we really know our God and live in awe of Him?
