Isaiah 5:22-23

Isaiah 5:22-23 Woe to those who are heroes at drinking wine, and valiant men in mixing strong drink, who acquit the guilty for a bribe, and deprive the innocent of his right!

Woe, God is saying, to those who dull their senses and drown their consciences with alcohol (drugs, sex, riches, whatever) so that they don't feel or care about the sin that they carry out every day.

Do you know people who boast about being able to drink a pint more than anyone else? Who revel in the strength of their cocktails or the power of their narcotics? Look at their moral lives and see where they are! These things run together, as Jesus made clear:

Matthew 7:16-17 You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes, nor figs from thistles, are they? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit; but the bad tree bears bad fruit.
