Isaiah 12:3-4 With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation. And you will say in that day: "Give thanks to the LORD, call upon His name, make known His deeds among the peoples, proclaim that His name is exalted."
Here we can hear the antecedent of Jesus' words when He spoke about living water and wells, both at the well in Samaria and in the Temple in Jerusalem. Fresh living water, overflowing with effervescent and almost incandescent life, bursting forth with enthusiasm and joy! Uncontainable and unending water, drawn from the well - read: source, origin - of salvation, Jesus Himself! We put our bucjet in Jesus and draw out life, praising Him, proclaiming His name and telling everyone among the nations what He has done for us and for them.
Is this what we see followers of Jesus doing today, every day? Ah, yes, missionaries; that is their job, that is what they are called to do. But what about you, what about me? Do we not have that water that gives so much uncontainable joy? If we had it, then surely we wouldn't be able to contain it either. That certainly seemed to have been the experience of the early followers of Jesus described in the pages of the Bible. Have we lost something - or have we never had it?
