Luke 17:33 Whoever seeks to preserve his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life will keep it.
This is so very counter-cultural for us today - and for a lot of time, I suspect. I don't think Jesus is here talking just about our physical life here on this earth, although the first half often works out that way in some areas of the world. But this verse is talking about LIFE, the eternal life that each of us has in Jesus. If we consider our physical life here on earth - however dear it might be to us and to others - as of secondary importance in the kingdom of God, then eternal life will continue. But if we do whatever it takes to keep our physical life here on earth at all costs, then we risk forfeiting our eternal life by misbehaving or falling into sin here and now. Worse, we may disown Jesus and so fall foul of His words:
Matthew 10:32-33 So everyone who acknowledges Me before men, I also will acknowledge before My Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies Me before men, I also will deny before My Father who is in heaven.
