Luke 16:13

Luke 16:13 No servant can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.

Here's the summit of Jesus' argument - one that more of us need to understand. It is impossible to serve two masters, obey two different (and conflicting) sets of instructions, follow two different set of priorities. It just doesn't work and either one or the other will get our attention and our service. Those of us that have to work two part-time jobs are sometimes painfully aware when one employer wants more time that the other already has!

But perhaps the point we miss is that the situation also applies when one 'master' is God and the other is 'ourselves'. We cannot serve both Him and us. It just doesn't work. To follow Jesus, we have to be committed to serving only Him and putting ourselves down.
