Luke 22:27 For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves.
Jesus here tells the disciples something they didn't understand. They all knew perfectly well that in the normal way of things, the greater is served by the lesser; that the servant stands and serves His master, who reclines in comfort at the table while he is waited on by the servants. But, Jesus says, I am among you as one who serves. When He washed the feet of the disciples, He was serving them; when He was crucified, He was serving us (all of us). He models servanthood so that none of us should become above ourselves and expect others to wait on us. Who are you waiting on and who waits on you today?
