Isaiah 53:4 Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.
Isaiah can see the irony in the situation. Jesus has made the exchange on our behalf - He has suffered in our place - but not only can most people not see it: they think it is all His problem anyway. This must surely have been the position of the Jewish leadership when they engineered for Pilate to have Jesus crucified. They thought He was a blaspheming sinner and that the truly right thing to do was to follow the rules of the Torah and have Him executed.
But what do people think today? How many see Him simply as mistaken and paying the price for impudence - daring to speak in God's name or on His behalf - or can they see the exchange taking place in front of them?
And you? Where do you stand?
