Autumn Study Days 2018

Led by: Dr Jonathan Allen, Director, Spreading The Word Online

North Street Church, Taunton, are delighted to host a short series of three Study Days during the autumn of 2018. Led by Dr Jonathan Allen, the director of Spreading The Word Online, they provide a unique opportunity to spend a whole day studying and learning together from tradition and recent scholarship at a readily accessible level. The series covers three different categories of material from the Bible - Paul's Letters, The Gospels and the Prophet Isaiah - and together we'll be exploring culture, history and the biblical texts to broaden our understanding of the ancient world and the way in which we can hear, interact and engage with the Bible for today.

Day One, Monday, October 8th Paul Re-imagined in His Original Context
On this first day, we'll be seeing Paul's writing in the light of his contemporary society rather than through our 21st century eyes, interacting with historical and contemporary interpreters as well as classical writers.

  1. Introduction, outline for the day. Who is Paul? What does Scripture tell us about him?
  2. What do the Jewish and social history backgrounds add to this picture?
  3. Hearing Paul's writings in context vs. Greek & Roman writers I
  4. Hearing Paul's writings in context vs. Greek & Roman writers II

Day Two, Monday, November 5st The Origins of the Gospels
On our second day, we'll be taking a look at the Jewish roots to the texts of the gospels. Drawing from early Jewish sources and the Hebrew Scriptures, showing how Jewish the gospels are in text, shape, themes and vocabulary, we'll identify some fragments of potential original Hebrew text and the threads of the Jewish calendar and feasts.

  1. Introduction, outline for the day. Hebrew text background to the Gospels
  2. How the Hebrew Scriptures are used or alluded to in the Gospels
  3. Hebrew concepts, words and ideas in the Gospels I
  4. Hebrew concepts, words and ideas in the Gospels II

Day Three, Monday, December 3th Isaiah in a Day
On the third day, we'll start with an overview of the book of Isaiah, covering structure, themes, dates and intentions. Then we'll move on to a detailed look at two chapters announcing freedom both for the original audience and those who hear his words today.

  1. Introduction, outline for the day. Overview, History, Structure, Themes, Vocabulary
  2. Justice, Righteousness, Faithfulness
  3. Isaiah Chapter 40 in detail
  4. A second chapter in detail

All three days will formally run from 10am to 4pm, arriving for registration, tea and coffee to start the day from 9:30am onwards. We'll take a break for tea, coffee and cake halfway through the morning and afternoon and will stop for about an hour over lunch and informal conversation. We'll be providing a sandwich and fruit lunch for everyone who would like to join us. All the sessions will be interactive, with time for questions and answers.

Dr Jonathan Allen obtained his PhD in Theology at Trinity College, Bristol, researching the role of identity formation and retention in the church, working under the supervision of Dr Howard Worsely. He has taught Hebrew classes for many years and publishes an on-line Bible commentary every week as well as a Daily Bible Reading plan.
