Luke 1:8-9 Now while he was serving as priest before God when his division was on duty, according to the custom of the priesthood, he was chosen by lot to enter the temple of the Lord and burn incense.
We know that Zechariah and his wife were barren and "advanced in years". They had no hope of children or family to support them, but that didn't stop them performing their calling before God. Zechariah could just have stayed at home; no-one forced him to go up to Jerusalem and serve with the other priests of his division. But he went anyway. He and his wife found purpose and meaning in life by continuing to be obedient to the Lord and obeying all His commandments.
