Luke 9:61-62 Yet another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home." Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plough and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
The third and last of these three vignettes also challenges delays, but questions the issue of loyalty. As before, Jesus well understands family relationships, so isn't really telling people to just walk out on their families, friends, relationships. In this text, He isn't asking or expecting this chap to abandon his previous life. This is more a question of commitment. He is really asking whether the chap has thought through the commitment that will be required and is making a reasoned response, rather than a knee-jerk quick reaction that he (and his family) will later regret.
What about you? Have you offended or estranged yourself from your family "for the sake of the gospel"? What message that sent them - are they likely to respond well to a gospel invitation now?
