John 4:9 The Samaritan woman said to Him, "How is it that You, a Jew, ask for a drink from me, a woman of Samaria?" (For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.)
At a casual reading this seems obvious. Why would Jesus ask her for a drink? She is reading His request at face value: are you mad or feeling alright? What is going on here, she wants to know.
But we know that Jesus never did anything unecessarily or without a reason. What is He up to here? The answer is that He is reaching out to her, across the racial, ethnic or religious divide between the Jews and the Samaritans in order to start a conversation and to share truth with her that will completely change her life. We know, although she doesn't (yet), that she is about to have a revelation of who Messiah is and her life and that of her village will change forever because they will have the well of living water that comes from knowing Jesus.
So is Jesus speaking to you today? Do you know Him? Is He trying to start a conversation with you?
