Proverbs 4:13 Take hold of instruction; do not let go. Guard her, for she is your life.
This comes right up against our in-bred sense of autonomy, doesn't it! We don't like instructions, we resent people telling us what do do. We want to make our own decisions - after all, we are the ones who know our circumstances and needs, not other people.
But the Proverb Writer is very clear. Guarding the instructions we have been given - and it's no use pretending you have never been given any, we all have! - is our life. They are what keep us alive and give us life. It's just that orienting our heart to doing them just seems to rub us up the wrong way.
Honesty time. Are you taking hold of your instructions, guarding them, studying them and - most importantly - doing them? What value are you placing on life?
